After shooting 84 and 87 in his last 2 competitive rounds, the last thing on Bill Longmuir’s mind was winning at the wonderful Stapleford Park Golf Club. Not only did he claim victory against this prestigious field, including star’s such as Forgan’s Ian Woosnam and Order of Merit winner Sam Torrance, the Scot shot a stunning 20 under par for the three rounds, to win by seven clear shots from England’s Roger Chapman and Thailand’s Boonchu Ruangkit.
There were mixed results for the Forgan of St Andrews staff players of Woosnam, David J Russell and Matt Briggs. DJ led the pack with 4 under par, with Woosie 2 shots further back at 2 under and Briggs a further 10 shots back after a final round 78. Both Woosnam and Russell were using their Forgan 150 Year Custom Fit Irons for the first time in competitive play and both came back delighted with the performance and feel they got from the clubs.
DJ was part of the three ball on Saturday that saw the highlight of the week, a hole in one from Argentines Adan Sowa at the 14th.
Longmuir picked up a cheque for EUR 71,381 from Japanese sponsor Haruhisa Handa with Champman and Ruangkit receiving EUR 39,319 each.
The event was hailed a great success and Shuif Hussain, Managing director of Stapleford Park is confident in bringing the event back to Leicestershire in 2011.
