The venues for both the 2013 and 2014 Senior Open Championship have been decided it was announced yesterday.

Royal Birkdale, in Southport, England, will become the 11th different course to host the 27th edition of the prestigious event in 2013, while Royal Porthcawl links course, on the Bristol Channel Coast, will host the senior major in July 2014.

Royal Birkdale hosted The Open hampionship on nice occasions, the most recent being in 2008 when Padraig Harrington held off a determined challenge from Greg Norman to win his consecutive Claret Jug.

Michael Hadden, Captain of Royal Birkdale said:

“Royal Birkdale Golf Club is extremely proud of its championship history and having hosted most of the major professional and amateur championships held in the UK, we are delighted to have been invited to host The Senior Open Championship for the very first time in 2013.”

“We particularly look forward to welcoming back some of our Open champions, but also the winners of some of the other events we have hosted throughout the years, such as Sam Torrance. I am sure this will be another great championship.”

Royal Porthcawl is likely to host warm-up events prior to the 28th Seniors Open and become the 12th course to host the prestigious senior tournament.

The links course, on the Bristol Channel coast, has staged the 1995 Walker Cup, the 1961 British Masters and the Welsh golf classic in the early 1980s.

The 2010 Senior Open Championship was won by American Russ Cochran at Walton Heath.

Next year’s championship takes place at Scotland’s Turnberry Golf Club, from July 26-29.
