The course which was only completed two years ago and cost eight million pounds to build has had changes costing nearly £750, 00.These changes are not meant to gain a home advantage against the Americans as has been done in previous years by Montgomerie’s predecessors, Forgan sponsored Ian Woosnam and Sam Torrence, but to make for a more interesting and competitive game of golf.
The changes include having bunkers deepened, the rough made thicker all around the course and the greens being made much firmer, so they are less likely to be receptive to spin.
Jim Mckenzie, Celtic Manor’s director of golf courses said “All along, Colin has insisted that he was not interested in gaining a home advantage
“If Europe do regain the Ryder Cup he wants it to be because they have played the better golf and not because the course has been tricked up.
“And in all my dealings with Colin since he was appointed Europe’s Ryder Cup captain I have to say he has not been over demanding.”
The changes will be experienced by the European tour players when they play the Welsh Open there on June 3rd
